Three top tips to find the right designer for your rebrand.

You’ve been thinking about giving your brand a fresh look for a while now. After much deliberation and planning, you’ve finally made the decision to invest. Congratulations!

But hang on - where do you begin the process?

With plenty of choices out there, it can be pretty overwhelming to know who to look for. And when you’re investing in a long-term choice for your business, you want to go with the right expert for your specific brand. Here are some tips we’ve weaved together to guide you through this process.

  1. Get crystal clear on what you want

Often we hear brand owners send out an SOS signal because they “need a logo ASAP”. We completely understand the impulse, as that feels like the starting point for your brand.

But hear us out…

It’s definitely worth considering all your options before landing on a logo as the solution. We really encourage you to consider the impact that brand design could have on your business. In saying this, ultimately there is a time and a place for everything. Listen to your gut instinct here as well and take an analytical look at what is best for your business right now. Maybe it’s time for a classic pros and cons list?

Working with a brand designer to create a visual identity that reflects your values will make you feel a lot more confident in your business. The right branding can make you feel more empowered to show up, talk about your brand and pitch your business to your ideal audience. Just like putting on the right outfit can put you on top of the world, an amazing brand can make you feel incredible. Business mindset is huge and if you feel totally confident in your brand, half the battle is won.

So in summary, get clear on what you want. Knowing if you want a brand package, or a standalone logo will help guide you towards the right designer. If you feel a little lost here you could always reach out and chat to a designer, see what they would recommend.

2. Prepare a budget

There’s no delicate way of putting this, but quality really does come at a cost and cutting corners can sometimes leave you with more issues further down the track. Sometimes choosing to spend less on a logo can cost you more in the long run than investing in a brand package.

Branding is a holistic process that takes into account your audience, your values, your business goals and so much more. A proper brand strategy leaves room for your brand to grow and evolve whereas a single logo can be restrictive. Good branding isn’t cheap, but with the right designer, you’ll definitely get your money’s worth!

Working with the right brand designer can also save you heaps of time. Instead of spending hours changing your brand colours and themes on Canva, you could be doing more to connect with your audience by putting out great content or improving their customer experience. By having a brand that authentically connects to your values, creating social posts is quick, easy and they land so much better with your audience!

When you are starting up a business, there can feel like a thousand expenses and things to pay for. If you feel in your gut that you have found the right designer but their packages feel a wee bit too expensive, ask for payment plan options or check if they can create a smaller package for your needs.

3. Know your values and what you want from the experience.

This is perhaps the most important part of choosing the right designer for you. There are plenty of design agencies, freelance designers and design studios out there. However, the experience you get from each one is what varies - and they both have pros and cons.

Working with a small design studio means you are communicating directly with the designer. You’re able to share your business values, dreams and goals with the person who will be bringing your brand together. This means you are building a relationship with this person, you know you will be heard and listened to as well. The experience will be more personalised, and curated for your brand. However the process may be slightly slower as you’re only working with one person. Also working with a solo brand designer may also be more affordable as they won’t have the overheads of an office and a full team to pay. Alternatively, when working with a bigger agency your project timelines might be quicker and you may have more people reviewing the work.

On this tune, if you find a designer or agency you’d really like to work with, we recommend reading through reviews to gain an extra insight on other people’s experiences with them. Don’t be afraid to test the waters and chat with a few different designers before choosing the right fit. With any investment, it helps to do some shopping around instead of looking for the “perfect match” straight away.
